Resonance of the rains
Raag in Sanskrit — a melodic framework for improvisation in Indian classical music, believed to colour the mind through emotion.
Born from a childhood fascination with the monsoons, Goonj Malhar is Ananya’s own symbolic raag — her home for all future clay creations. It holds the deep cultural, philosophical, and spiritual significance of the monsoons, shaped by a life lived between India and the UK.
Reflecting on the experience of rain across both homes, she uses this framework to create layered emotional landscapes of celebration, longing, memory, and place. Rain is the theme as well as collaborator — both in its presence and absence.
Through this process, Ananya explores nostalgia, community, unpredictability, and the simplicity of childhood joy, working with natural rhythms, materials, and change to allow meaning to emerge gradually through making.

By incorporating natural elements — stones gathered from specific places, ashes from wood fires, slip from riverbeds — Ananya creates work that seeks simplicity, honesty, and quiet depth.
These are not materials chosen for their appearance. They are chosen for what they carry: the memory of place, the chemistry of transformation, the trace of something larger than the work itself.

Through sculptural landscapes, I work with curiosity, repetition, and material sensitivity to explore emotional states that are often difficult to hold — belonging and separation, fragility and strength, innocence, tenderness, reverence, and compassion.
I see making as a way of meeting the unknown: learning through touch, change, rhythm, and surprise. There is no fixed outcome at the start of a piece — only an orientation toward the material and a willingness to follow where it leads.
Nature is both refuge and collaborator in my process. By incorporating natural elements — stones, ashes, slips gathered from specific places — I create work that seeks simplicity, honesty, and quiet depth, while allowing meaning to emerge gradually through presence, experimentation, and sustained engagement with materials.
Each piece is a record of a particular quality of attention. Not mastery, but meeting.
